YMCA Feasibility Study
In the 2019 Citizen Satisfaction Survey, the construction of a community center was listed as one of the capital projects the community would like to see constructed in Basehor. Community centers are costly to construct and operate. City staff has been researching options to be able to bring an amenity such as a community center to Basehor while also minimizing the impacts to the City’s budget.
In August of 2023, the City Administrator and Deputy City Administrator proactively contacted the Greater Kansas City YMCA to determine if the YMCA would be interested in having discussions to possibly construct a YMCA facility in Basehor. The YMCA is a nonprofit organization that operates community centers of various sizes with various programming in 10,000 communities across the country. The discussions with YMCA leadership have been very positive although very preliminary. Staff believes a facility such as the YMCA would be a great amenity in Basehor and would deliver several of the services the community said they would like to see while minimizing the impact to the City’s budget.
The City has authorized a feasibility study to be completed by Wiese Research Group with consultation from the YMCA. The feasibility study will include survey postcards that will be sent to all residences and businesses within City limits. It will also include phone surveys of surrounding areas.
It is important to note for the public that this feasibility study is not a guarantee that a YMCA facility will be constructed in Basehor. It is equally important to note the feasibility study will not finalize the size, location, programming, amenities, and other details of the possible project. Those details would be determined further along in the process if the project advances.
