Building Basehor: Sales Tax Election - 2023

Update from 6/8/2023: sales tax results

The City received the results of the sales tax election. The 1% sales tax for the purpose of enhancing police, improving parks, and bettering roads did not pass with a total of 906 votes against and 845 votes in favor.

We sincerely appreciate everyone who took the time to cast their vote. This was truly a decision of the people, and we appreciate the community’s questions, feedback, and engagement over the last few months.

As we said several times throughout this process, we are ready to serve our community, no matter what is decided. And that remains true today.

Building Basehor

Building Basehor: Enhancing Police, Improving Parks, and Bettering Roads.

The City of Basehor will hold a special mail ballot election on June 8, 2023 to determine the City’s desire to impose a 1% general citywide sales tax with a 10-year sunset for the purpose of enhancing police, improving parks, and bettering roads. All eligible, registered voters within the city limits of Basehor will be able to vote. A sunset means the sales tax would expire after 10-years and could be renewed only upon approval by a vote of the people.

In the most recently conducted Citizen Satisfaction Survey, the residents of Basehor identified the top priorities for improvement as sidewalks/trail connections, walking and biking trails, streets, and park amenities.

Likewise, in the 2022 Comprehensive Plan and Parks Master Plan, community members were surveyed and asked to identify priorities for the City. The survey results indicated that respondents want to see more parks, opportunities for recreation, sidewalks, and trails.

Additionally, enhancing police has been a priority of Basehor’s Governing Body in the last several budget cycles. Basehor is a place where we take pride in our community and its safety.

The City plans on providing educational materials on this upcoming election to assist voters in making an informed decision. More information will be posted over the next several weeks regarding this sales tax election and the planned uses for this revenue. Please stay connected with the City for updates on its  website at www.cityofbasehor.org and on its social media pages @cityofbasehor. The City will also be sending mailed communication in the Basehor Quarterly and through other methods. The City plans to host two open houses for the community so community members can meet with the City to ask questions about the sales tax election and the possible projects that could be funded if it were approved.

Update from 3/10/2023:

Building Basehor: Did you know that only 1% of the current sales tax in Basehor goes directly to our city? An additional 1% general citywide sales would allow for the support and enhancement of Police operations as well as improvements to parks, trails, and streets. The 1% general citywide sales tax would include a 10-year sunset, where the sales tax would expire after 10-years and could be renewed only upon approval by a vote of the people.

Happy Friday, Basehor! The City of Basehor will hold a mail ballot election on June 8, 2023 for a 1% general citywide sales tax with a 10-year sunset for the purpose of enhancing police, improving parks, and bettering roads. Ove the last year, the City has been hard at work surveying all road conditions in the city limits to create a 5-year improvement plan. If the sales tax were to be approved, proceeds of the sales tax would be used for the implementation of the 5-year improvement plan.

Learn about City projects.” On this page, you will find additional information, including an FAQ and past presentations that have been made regarding this sales tax election. Update from 3/24/2023:

The City of Basehor will hold a special mail ballot election on June 8, 2023 to determine the City’s desire to impose a 1% general citywide sales tax with a 10-year sunset for the purpose of enhancing police, improving parks, and bettering roads. All eligible, registered voters within the city limits of Basehor will be able to vote. A sunset means the sales tax would expire after 10-years and could be renewed only upon approval by a vote of the people.

Enhancing police has been a priority of Basehor’s Governing Body in the last several budget cycles. Basehor is a place where we take pride in our community and its safety. In today’s market, recruiting and retaining police officers is very challenging. Providing a compensation package that is competitive in the KC metropolitan area to help recruit quality officers and avoid losing officers to other agencies is important. Additionally, we need to ensure Basehor’s police officers have access to modern equipment, training, and vehicles to perform their duties safely and effectively.

The City plans on providing educational materials on this upcoming election to assist voters in making an informed decision. More information will be posted over the next several weeks regarding this sales tax election and the planned uses for this revenue. Update from 4/7/2023:

It's Friday which means it's time for more facts about sales tax! This Friday, let’s highlight Sentinel Park and give a huge shout-out to the students from Basehor-Linwood High School’s Innovation Academy Emerge Program that worked so hard on this project!

In every recent survey (2019 Citizen Satisfaction Survey and the 2021/2022 Comprehensive Plan + Parks Master Plan) respondents conveyed they want to see more parks, trails, and recreational opportunities.

If funded, Sentinel Park would showcase the students’ talents and tremendous efforts, which included surveying community members, designing concept drawings, and recommending a name for the park that honors Basehor’s history. The Basehor Sentinel was a local newspaper that was in circulation in our community for over 100 years.

Proceeds generated from the sales tax would allow funding for Sentinel Park, in addition to park improvements for other city parks.
